The records contain three parchment copies of the Rules of subscription to a fund for the establishment of a professorship of Natural History and two parchment copies of a List of subscribers. Four parchment copies of the Rules were created after the establishment of the Professorship. The President and Fellows of Harvard College, the Massachusetts Society for Promoting of Agriculture, the Visitors of the Massachusetts Professorship of Natural History, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts each received a copy of the Rules. In addition, copies of the List of subscribers were delivered to the President and Fellows of Harvard College and to the Board of Visitors. Rules of subscription to a fund for the establishment of a professorship of Natural History, (folders 1-3, 3 copies). This document describes the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Professorship of Natural History. The rules describe the procedures for the election of the professor; defines the duties of the professor, including the professor's responsibility to establish and administer a botanic garden, to give lectures in botany and entomology, and to collect mineralogical specimens for the use of the College; outlines the fiduciary relationship between the Corporation and the Board of Visitors of the Massachusetts Professorship of Natural History involving the management of the Professorships real estate and personal property; and acknowledges the Board of Visitors' right to make all rules and regulations regarding the Professorship in order to promote the interests of the College and the arts and agriculture of Massachusetts. The document is divided into six chapters and is written on parchment. List of subscribers (folders 4-5, 2 copies). This document records the names of 152 donors to the Massachusetts Professorship of Natural History. The donations range from $100 to $2000. The document is written on parchment.
